Brainstorming for the Exterior of your Existing Home

Brainstorming for the Exterior of your Existing Home

Since we’re all staying home more lately, it’s a great time to go outside and walk your property to see if you want to enhance or update anything.

Ask yourself if there is anything that frustrates you about your property? Then, think about the main goal you hope to achieve with any improvements. Is it to increase curb appeal, sale potential, or your own satisfaction with aesthetics or functionality? Lifestyle changes to your grounds might be overdue, maybe the swing set area now could be a fire pit or a spa area!

One of the more noticeable things you can do is repaint the exterior of your home to a more current color. An example would be the new color of the year – “rich charcoal gray” (a shade in-between black and gray with hints of dark blue), which gives a home an ultra-modern upgrade.

Consider adding a portico or a new front door to add intrigue and distinction while making your home feel more inviting and a little more elegant. Some material suggestions would be glass, metal, wood, or a combination of the three.

Updating your pavement or sidewalks can make a huge impact especially with a new layout. To make your entry pop, add planter beds, containers or large pots in fun shapes filled with colorful shrubs or flowers. If you are tired of spending so much energy on your lawn, think about simulated grass to decrease your water usage, mowing time, and fighting with the gophers.

If you have a side yard and aren’t getting much use out of it, think about giving it some purpose by putting in a potting area, raising orchids, adding raised planters for fresh herbs and vegetables, or maybe even a lap pool.

As far as the backyard goes, maybe you’ve been wanting a pool, so utilize this time to design your dream pool. Or, if you have a pool and aren’t using it, you could fill it in and create an entertainment area instead. Add a hammock, fire pit with seating, outdoor heaters for dining al fresco, or an extra seating area with a stylish umbrella for a pop of color. On the sports side, you could try a bocce, badminton, oversized chess set or a volleyball court. Take advantage of the winter season and buy new patio furniture on sale. Spoil yourself with a cabinet or outside mounted TV to extend your home outdoors for a morning spot of sun, coffee, and the news.

These are just a few ideas to get you thinking when you tire of jigsaw puzzles, board games, and TV. Stay well, everyone.
