Holiday Storage Tips for Less Stress and Better Organization

Holiday Storage Tips for Less Stress and Better Organization

Are you tired of not being able to find things every December or disappointed some items got dented or broken?  Are your holiday items stored all over the house in different locations as you don’t have enough space to store in one location? Proper holiday storage not only protects your decorations but also saves you time, space, and money year after year. With a little planning and the right techniques, you can keep your holiday items in excellent condition and make next season’s setup a breeze.

Here are practical holiday storage tips to help you stay organized and stress-free.

  1. Sort and De-clutter Before Storing

Before packing anything away, take time to sort through your decorations. Discard broken lights, damaged ornaments, or items you no longer use.  De-cluttering now prevents unnecessary storage and makes future decorating easier.

Tip: Create categories such as ornaments, lights, wreaths, table décor, and outdoor decorations before packing.

  1. Use Clear, Durable Storage Containers

Clear plastic bins are ideal for holiday storage because they protect items from moisture, dust, and pests while allowing you to see what’s inside. Choose sturdy, stackable containers to maximize space in closets, garages, or storage units. Some recommend a breathable top to avoid condensation forming inside the container or poking a hole in the top.

Label each bin clearly with its contents and the holiday it belongs to—this saves time and prevents unnecessary unpacking later.

  1. Protect Fragile Decorations

Ornaments, figurines, and heirloom décor require extra care. Wrap fragile items individually using tissue paper, bubble wrap, or soft fabric.  Avoid peanuts for packing as they are messy!  Egg cartons and ornament dividers are excellent for small, delicate pieces. There are also dish pack sleeves for holiday plates.

Avoid newspaper when wrapping decorations, as ink can transfer and stain surfaces. Packing paper is a better choice.

  1. No room at home, try a self -self storage unit
